Robert Taylor: Network Visionary

Posted on June 4th, 2010 by admin in links and networking | 7 Comments »

[Recorded May 13, 2010]
Bob Taylor planned to be a Methodist minister like his father. Instead, he became an evangelist for an idea that changed the world: easy-to-use computers that talk to each other. “I was never interested in the computer as a mathematical device, but as a communication device,” Taylor said. Taylor’s interests — and his genius for getting them funded — helped develop computer networking, the personal computer, and many of the other technologies that drove the global computer revolution.

As director of ARPA’s Information Processing Techniques office, Taylor funded Doug Engelbart, inventor of the mouse and co-inventor of many of the aspects of computing we take for granted today from clickable links to multiple windows. Taylor then hired networking pioneer Larry Roberts to oversee the ARPAnet project — the first major experiment in general computer networking, and a key ancestor of the Internet.

As founder of the Xerox PARC Computer Systems Laboratory, Taylor went on to recruit and manage the hot-tempered brigade of geniuses who developed the set of features so familiar on our Mac and Windows machines today, including the graphical user interface, Ethernet and laser printing. He also oversaw important work in connecting networks to each other.

In this candid and far-ranging discussion with Guy Raz, the weekend host of NPR’s All Things Considered, Taylor shares his life stories and discusses the process of fostering innovation and the evolution of radical technologies.

Hope you find this helpful!

Specs on me: I’ve been in the tech support field for about 9yrs (helpdesk to now sys admin) and I’m just looking to share the knowledge and help folks out.

I don’t know everything (some techs act otherwise…haha), but if there’s something you need help with, let me know.

No question is too small or too big…but if it happens to be on the “big” side and I don’t know, then I’ll help you find the answer : )

Thanks for watching!

3 NetFPGA router Demonstration

Posted on May 31st, 2010 by admin in networking router | No Comments »

The NetFPGA enables researchers and students to build working prototypes of high-speed, hardware-accelerated networking systems. The NetFPGA has been used in the classroom to teach students how to build Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) switches and Internet Protocol (IP) routers that use hardware rather than software to forward packets. The NetFPGA hardware can be used by researchers to prototype new types of clean-slate services for next-generation networks.

A demonstration of NetFPGA routers was presented on February 28, 2008. In this 12-minute video, three NetFPGA routers were set up and high-definition video was streamed across the Gigabit-speed network. All of the packet switching and routing functions were performed in hardware. The Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing protocol was run in the Software Component of the Router (SCONE). As shown in the demonstration, OSPF allowed the video to be re-routed across a two-hop network path when the one-hop link was disconnnected. The Java-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) is used to control and monitor the operation of the NetFPGA hardware.

For more information on the NetFPGA, see http://NetFPGA.org/

http://www.UndergroundTrainingLab.com In early 2008 I spoke at the Secret Society of Traffic and Conversion Seminar for my friends Buck Rizvi and Brock Felt. The attendees paid thousands to be there but I’m sharing my 3 hour presentation from the seminar with you for free. I outlined the social networking and web 2.0 strategies that I personally use to drive tons of traffic to build my list and make more sales. I covered dozens of topics including, but not limited to, internet marketing, creating a sales funnel, search engine optimization (seo), myspace, youtube, squidoo, email marketing, wordpress, rss feeds, openx ad server, affiliate marketing, blogs, getting more traffic to your sites, social profile pages, social networking, social media, and more!

In this CitronTech video, I will be showing you how to set your wireless settings such as network name, password and more!

Works on: Windows, Mac and Linux.

Have any questions? Ask them in the comments or send me a message! I’ll reply to all of them ASAP.

Link to the routers settings page:
http://192.168.0.1/

If you’re not on the DIR-615 but are on another wireless router from D-Link, your default router IP may be:
http://192.168.0.0/

Some routers such as Linksys have DIFFERENT IP addresses so if you have a different router, Google for “(Router model) IP” and you should find the default IP. You can also look in your internet settings.
