Anyone have the links of the websites that helped organize the riots in Egypt and Tunisia?

Posted on April 5th, 2011 by admin in links and networking | 5 Comments »

For a class project, we’re looking for the links of social networking sites (facebook, twitter, youtube, etc.) that helped organize the protests in Egypt and Tunisia. We’re looking for the original links in Arabic created by Egyptians and Tunisians.

For example, videos such as this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWr6MypZ-JU&feature=player_embedded Thank you!

This a link for a facebook page for Anonymous who did alot of help online for the Tunisian’s and will possibly do the same for the Egyptians. They are the ones who crashed the government websites etc… http://www.facebook.com/reqs.php#!/pages/TunAnonymous-News-Network/183771314977353 This is their page dedicated to Tunisia. Info on it is in English, French and Arabic.

What would be the determining factor that would get you to switch to a new social networking site?

Posted on January 31st, 2011 by admin in networking switch | 1 Comment »

Would it just be that all your friends are on your current SNS?
Would it be a new feature of the new SNS? If so, what would that feature be?
Would it be that the site is more of a niche community?
Etc…

Thanks for any input!

Probably the density of my real life network already on that ‘SNS’. I’m a lemming!

In terms of niche communities… I find that I dip in and out of ‘conversations’ that take place in comments sections of online magazines I read, or bulletin boards I visit. I’d be unlikely to want to hook in to more permanent relationships with users on those sites – the connection there is a single interest or issue. On those sites, organic connections happen on an ad-hoc and inconsistent basis because users have nothing in common but that interest. (Or nothing that’s immediately obvious.)

Facebook is popular, I think, because of the robustness of real life relationships – trust. New people you meet online are more likely to have more in common with you in several areas of life.

There is no user function that would make a difference. People tolerate awful usability on FB because of its social psychological dimensions.

How to set permissions for networking sharing (Windows 7) on different computers?

I have two computers, a desktop and a laptop. I want to be able to access my desktop documents from my laptop, and vice versa. i can already do that by going through the home network, but there are other users on then desktop, and I want to set permissions so that only my account on the desktop, and only my account on the laptop, can access and alter the files in my documents on both computers. How do I do this?

Either setup NTFS permissions on the files or set a share password.

Can I put network switches into a sound amp rack?

Posted on January 19th, 2011 by admin in networking switches | 1 Comment »

I am running a lan party (PC Gaming network) and want to be able to safely transport both my 24 port switches and a some cable management panels all in one handy box.

Would an amp road case designed for music equipment be suitable? If not what would?

As long as it’s a 19" rack it should work. You might need to pay attention to whether it’s a square, round, or threaded hole rack. Some racks for telecom equipment are wider (22 or 23" I forget which)

One thing to watch out for is devices that are only mounted at the front but are relatively heavy or deep. when you go over bumps in the road it’s very stressful on the mounting. You could break off the rack mount hardware. Much less of a problem if you have rails that attach at the front and rear of the rack. (which is a function of the rack mount for the equipment and whether the rack has posts in the rear for the back of the rails.

Once you have achieved an Associates Degree in Computer Networking, how hard will finding a job be?

Posted on January 17th, 2011 by admin in computer networking | 2 Comments »

Wondering how hard it will be to find employment after my associates degree in computer networking.

Depends on how high you set your expectations. If you are content with entry level work making $8-9/hr cleaning spyware off PCs then it won’t be too hard. If you expect to come out of the program and get a job as a network admin right away, you’re probably not being realistic.

It also depends on how knowledgeable you are on the subject matter and how much experience you have. If you have 10 years of experience, then you will be better equipped to get a higher level position than someone who has no experience. Also, it’s been my observation that many people who choose computer networking programs typically aren’t ready for "prime time" when they graduate. They need a year or two on the job to get up to speed.

As the previous posted said, consider internships. You may not get paid, but you’ll be gaining experience which will help you in the long run and is really what the internship program is designed to do.

Certifications are also good, but make sure that you can speak intelligently about subjects you’re certified on. For example, if you interview with me and say you have your MCSE and CCNA certification but can’t hold a conversation about anything that wasn’t included in the test prep material, you will probably not be considered for the position.

How can one computer on a network be used to stream from the DVD drive?

Posted on January 14th, 2011 by admin in links and networking | 1 Comment »

I have a home network linked with player on each. The problem is there is no access to any drives including the DVD drives. It lists music and so forth, but nothing for any drives. So from computer A one cannot see or even start a DVD drive on computer B. Am I missing something?

Set the drives to shared

A networking device to pick up a router and further the signal around the house?

Posted on January 9th, 2011 by admin in networking router | 4 Comments »

I have a router but the laptops can only find 1 BAR of signal when they are upstairs. What is the device called which finds the router and makes go further. I cannot remember the name for it.

A bridge or range extender. These are usually separate devices, but some models of router can be used in ‘bridge mode’ with the same model or same brand.

You can also try repositioning the router so it is closer to the ceiling, or try a higher gain antenna or antenna extension cable.
