What important characteristics should I look for when selecting a wireless router?
I’m currently using a high speed DSL connection with a D-Link LAN network to another computer. We seem to be getting a lot of static and "noise"on our regular land line phones which share the same modem telephone line as the server computer. I’m hoping by putting the computers and printers on a wireless router instead of the D-Link that this will solve the problem. I have DSL and telephone filters on all lines.
"What important characteristics should I look for when selecting a wireless router?"
1.) reliability – you want a company with brand name recognition, a good support system in case of problems and a good history with quality.
2.) ease of use – pointless if you can’t get it to work
3.) speed – You need to be able to move files at least 3 times faster than you normally use for those occasions you need that file off your network and you need it NOW.
4.) range – need to be able to walk around your house and have at least 75% signal
5.) updatability – most decent brands allow you to re-flash your router to newer firmware to improve speed, stability and security.
With the filters you should not have any noise at all, I would recommend checking your wiring with the modem powered down, if the noise remains then its not your modem/routers fault.
Moving to a different router most likely won’t solve the problem since you still will be using the same phone line for both phone and internet. You either need to get a better filter or consider moving away from using a DSL line on the same line as your primary land-line. My friends DSL line is used for faxes so there is no degradation of quality-of-service on his primary phone line.

What type of router are you using? Check the product’s q&a in the online troubleshooting. It also may depend on the size and complexity of your home network. If you are connecting a lot of systems to the network it may be too much for a low end router. So maybe upgrading WOULD help.
When looking for routers, look at the "typical use" of that particular product. For instance, all network admins take a survey of what they are doing before they buy. If you have 4 or 5 pc’s plus a printer and a laptop you want to keep connected along with having little to no "noise" on the lines, I would look for products that offer exactly that. Also, call your ISP and see if a technician can come out and check your lines. "Noise" can also occur is lines are touching.
Good luck, hope I could help.
