Knowledge is far more important than formal training or education.

Employers care primarily about one thing: Can you get the job done quickly and effectively? If you have the know how, then you can easily get into the tech field. As you work, word of mouth about your knowledge and experience will grow… resulting in other opportunities opening up.

That being said, certifications are often a rubber stamp to prove you possess the knowledge and can be a requirement by many employers. MSCE and A+ are two common certification requirements (depending on your field of work).

Personally, I like the security field best. It’s a quick and easy way to make a buck. Nothing makes an impression on a client quite like walking in and (with his permission) obtaining sensitive information. Once companies see just how vulnerable they are, they’re willing to shell out quite a few dollars to plug up those holes. Security and Penetration Testing, in my opinion, is the way to go. It’s a freelance job that you can do in your spare time while in school. For this sort of job, I’d recommend a CEH certification (Certified Ethical Hacker) for starters and progressing down the certification tree if you feel the need. Additional training and certification is available from Offensive Security (good for know-how, but not sure how accepted the cert is).

    Most IT jobs are non-union.

Networking is hot filed in IT jobs. If you are interested for advance networking study then go for CISCO certification like CCNA, CCNP, CCVP and fine CCIE.
