There are a lot of ways to accomplish this task. Does your laptop have wireless built in? If so you could purchase an inexpensive wirless router and connect the home pc via a CAT 5 Cable and the laptop wirelssly. If not then a standard router that both computers could hook to via CAT 5 cables would also work. You would then need to set up sharing on both computers and you should be able to transfer files after that with no problem.
