I just want to create a social networking site, one where it is different than Twitter or Facebook. I just want to create one for my school, to help us connect more differently.

Where would I even begin?

You can start by reading up on HTML and such but it is very complicated to do that

I am doing a research paper on social networking and its NEGATIVE impact on our nation’s youth today. Does anyone have a good theory to "what if social networking sites never existed/happened"? It would be a great closing to my conclusion!

If you want it to be really dramatic you could talk about people that would still be alive if social networking sites didn’t exist due to online bullying. I’m sure you could find some stories on google.

How is networking scope in the IT industry? Is the demand of networking professionals is increasing rapidly or it has become slow? Do the networking professionals need to update their skills every-time when the course is updated. Is there any institute which provides training for life time who has completed the course previously in their institute when the course is changed or updated?

I am working on a project to build a social networking web site from scratch using oracle database and an application server like Tomcat. Can any one with prior experience let me know what is the total cost I can expect to incur in execution of this project? Assumption is that this website will be able to support several million users.

I have a few experience in social network developments.
Before all, be aware that very few are successful: 99.9% of attempts go down the drain within a year.
Why? Because they are not ADVERTISED by any other means than the web. In other words, if they are not advertised using other medias (tV, radio, papers etc), they do not survive.
So, what is the cost?
A relatively complex social network will cost a few grands to set-up (expect 3-6k minimum for a "decent" site).
To the cost of development, of course, you have to add the domain and the server(s). At start, this is nearly "free": for $100, you have all you need.
Once set-up and fully tested, it needs to be promoted.
Here come the costs. It depends of the type of network you do. A SN for dentists, for example, will need to be advertised in all the specialised magazines for dentists, and that is not cheap.
You want a Facebook? You need a MASSIVE start-up for a few months, on TV and many other medias.
Fail that, and it simply "won’t start".
But…
It HAS started, and you get a few thousands members…
The cost of your server will increase dramatically: you need dedicated server at start, and, once you reach the millions, a server FARM (more than one server).
It becomes worldwide? You need servers in different countries… and in different languages!
That means a TEAM of coders, available 24/7, to respond to the demand.
That, also, means powerful BANDWIDTH, a very expensive requirement. A SN like second-life pays several $1000’s PER DAY for their bandwidth… But with 35,000 concurrent visitors a day, each one paying a few $… They are covered!

SN like Y!A are successful, because supported by big, large, powerful multinational companies.

In the end, a successful SN can only survice if it becomes a heavy business, with staff, infrastructure, admin and legal department.

That is a totally different ball game as making your own, little "Y!A" on your local server.

Successful websites (SN or not), are supported by serious money and professional staff.
Or they are not successful and go to oblivion a few months after birth.

Several million users? Between 2 and 5 million $ of investment. And 25% of turnover a year profit.

I am planning to do MS from Telecommunication and Networking, I don’t want to miss out on applying to Top universities for the course. My friends speak very highly of the TCOM course at UPenn, want to know how the university fares when compared to other state universities for this particular major.

Those courses at UPenn aren’t very well-taught or attended. They’re seriously considering cutting out those courses altogether.

I heard in the news today that social networking websights such as facebook are the cause of a lot of depression among people. If anything I thought it kept people linked together. I live alone and love it because if I actually do want someone to talk to I can just get on facebook and chat with some of my old classmates and it is just like if they are right there. Like having one big party at my house and don’t have to worry about actually asking anyone to leave hah. So what are they talking about?

Seeing as how it was on the radio, it most likely means that a small correlation was found between people who use social networking sites and depression, which would mean that people using them might be slightly more likely to develop depression. I would have to see the actual study to say for sure, but it probably means there’s a relationship, and not that its the cause. Radios/Newspapers like to make definite statements though, which often vary greatly from the truth.

If there is a relationship, it might be because some people who use those sites might also feel socially isolated – this could be because they stay on the computer rather than going out and then feel isolated OR that people who are already socially isolated may be more likely to use social networking sites in an attempt to feel it less…

Again, without the actual study that the radio was "citing" it is hard to say.. but, as I am sure you’ve heard before, don’t believe everything you hear… [studies cited in the media are rarely read correctly...]

What are the details if i want to start a social networking website of my own?
What would it cost to get the website made, the server,etc?
And what other things/facilities would i need?

Well if you think this would be simple, it wouldn’t at all, especially if you wanted it to be popular. It would require a great deal of knowledge of how to code. You would most likely need other people who also knew how to do this. You would also need a lot of software to program the website, too. And it all depends where you plan on hosting the website, you could buy a hoster, or you could host it from home for free, OR you could buy a server. Hosting it from home is free, buying a host depends on the company, and buying a server depends on what kind of server you get, a small one can round to about a $1,000(But you’ll need more later on so it wouldn’t crash due to overload.) You’d also need "White" hackers to tell you how your website could be hacked so you could fix those.

Pretty much any will do as long as you keep the devices on the same floor of the building unless you elect ethernet over coax.

My Mum has blocked any sites to do with social networking and email and music. She’s also blocked anything that needs downloading, I can’t download anything. Is there any way I can get on to an IM chat site without getting blocked by K9 security? Are there any sites I can go on to that will ACTUALLY work? 10 points best answer.

You should talk with your mother and see if at least some of these sites can be unblocked, even for specific times during the day. If you’re caught using other means to bypass her blocks, it will only cause her suspicions to grow, and she may cancel the internet entirely.

You know Twitter is the most used networking site but it’s time will end like all the networking sites before. No Empire lasts forever.
