networking two computers with a crossover cable?

Posted on May 11th, 2010 by admin in networking computers | 5 Comments »

I’m trying to connect my laptop to my main desktop PC with a crossover cable but not having much luck so far. I’ve give them static IP adresses which is working fine, they can ping one another no problem but when i go into ‘my network places’ the shared files aren’t there (I’ve enabled sharing on the hard drives of both computers and ‘file and print sharing’ is installed and enabled). When I go to ‘view workgroup computers’ i can see the computer i want to connect to but when i try and explore it, it says it’s not accessible and to check i have permission (I’m the only user account on both computers). What am I doing wrong?

You also need to configure your computers firewall to allow the network connection. The computer you cant access is were the firewall is blocking you.

I need help networking my two computers?

Posted on May 10th, 2010 by admin in networking computers | 4 Comments »

I have two laptops, the first is a new toshiba satellite, and the other is an hp pavilion dv6000. The toshiba is running windows vista home premium, and the HP is running xp media center edition. I have not been able to get them to see each other on the network, which is through a linksys wierless router. How can i get them to network so that my friend and i can play games and trade files and stuff.

make sure that the ip addresses are in the same ip range such as the 192.168.0.x etc and that your firewall settings allow file and printer sharing

40th Anniversary of the Net – October 29, 1969

Posted on May 5th, 2010 by admin in networking computers | 13 Comments »

On the evening of October 29, 1969 the first data travelled between two nodes of the ARPANET, a key ancestor of the Internet. Even more important, this was one of the first big trials of a then-radical idea: Networking computers to each other. The men who symbolically turned the key on the connected world we know today were two young programmers, Charley Kline at UCLA and Bill Duvall at SRI in Northern California, using special equipment made by BBN in Cambridge, Massachussetts.

networking computers and conection speed?

Posted on May 1st, 2010 by admin in networking computers | 3 Comments »

ive had 2 computers and ps3 networked to share same conn, everything works fine ,i added another comp and now my conn runs slower? is the speed suppose to slow down even if the other comps and ps3 are not on?

In my experience the most common cause of this is that the computer you just added is a bandwidth hog. This could be caused by legitimate reasons such as Windows Updates, AV updates, other updates happening simulatnously

More likely the computer is infected withsomething. Dont think that just because you dont download porn or you have Antivirus software that you are safe.

Short of running a packet sniffer on the computer and interpreting its results, I would either reformat it and start over (back up your crap) or take it to a shop.

Modern viruses worms spyware rootkits etc are way to complex for a normal person to remove.

Gone are the days that if you have Norton and Adaware you are OK.
