A Question about wireless internet networking?

Posted on June 15th, 2010 by admin in internet networking | 2 Comments »

My university requires a login to use its wireless internet network on campus, in order to restrict those people affiliated with the school. But because it does this, can it also monitor every single user’s web activity?

Basically colleges use the wireless internet network to make the system look neat and easy. I could not grab your question, whether the college is restricting its affiliates or else?

Most college or corporate networks require the login to use th internet via wireless. They configure this to make sure that other unauthorized person don’t suck the bandwidth and perform mundane acts. The use of login makes the system secure beside the Network Key.

We can monitor the user activity but not in detail. If some user is using heavy sites like YouTube, we can monitor that. But we need to install special software router called Mikrotik where we can see the current(real time) usage by the user in our queue.

If you are expecting it in the normal router, then we can only view the clients connected, and not their usage.

However, monitoring the every user web activity can be done only in the proxy server(applicable only for system admins) where the requests can be viewed from the particular IP. But the method is not easy and need expertise.

How careful are you with internet social networking sites?

Posted on May 21st, 2010 by admin in internet networking | 5 Comments »

1. Do you not believe in them?
2. Do you add everyone you have met once? (you know exactly what I mean)
3. Do you set limitations/block certain people
4. Do you set specific preferences?
5. Why are you on these sites if you choose to be so careful?
Does a person’s facebook/myspace/whatever else other social networking site reveals a lot about them?

1. This is the only one. I will not go to another one. I have a face book account. Only been there once.
2. No I don’t. This is my 3rd yahoo account. I’ve learned, not to. I did once.
3. I didn’t at one time. I do now. Especially in 1 section. I have like 6 people blocked with more coming.
4. Yes. I don’t allow IM or for people to see my contacts and questions.
5. I like the anonymity of it all. I like answering questions and answering. You learn some things and teach some things.
