how do I check the signals from my RS232 cable?

Posted on August 31st, 2011 by admin in links and networking | 2 Comments »

How do I check and see if the correct signals are communicating between my DCE and DTE on a SCADA network. I’m talking about the ring, RTS, CTS, DTR, ect…. I would like to view each one. Is there a software program or a tool? I know the obvious thing is to check each end to see if they register each other, but I’d like to disect the network link a little. Thanks.

The web page at:
http://www.piclist.com/techref/io/serial/rs232.htm has a few RS232 monitor programs for PC’s (look under "RS232 Monitor Programs" and some information on cables to attach to those signals.

I’ve always just used an oscilloscope. A digital with triggering does a fine job of showing you want is actually going on. I’m not sure if a meter would be useful if the lines are change state quickly, and an analog scope is useless if the data isn’t repeating very consistently and often.

Is it possible to connect 2 network switches to multiple switches for redundancy?

Posted on August 28th, 2011 by admin in networking switches | 2 Comments »

Here’s the example, a single server with 2 NIC with a single virtual IP connected to 2 switches A and B. From A and B both will be interconnected to another 2 switches C and D. From C and D to a single switch and from that single switch to a PC.

Is this possible in a networking environment?

Yes, it’s possible. I generally recommend using OSPF or RIP routing with VLAN trunking or a routing switch, but there are a lot of other ways to do it.

Spanning tree is another way. If you’re willing to make sure your single switch supports spanning tree and you’re willing to bridge the two NICs in the server, it will all ‘just work’. However, if you’re not careful, you may wind up with awful traffic patterns. (For example, if another device connected to switch C needs to talk to another device on switch D, that may wind up going through the server!)

Where do you want the intelligence to be? Putting it in the single PC is the simplest solution. But if your implicit assumption is that dozens of PCs will all be able to access the server, then that’s not going to work for you.

The single switch can also make the decision if it’s a routing switch. If you use OSPF and put switches C and D in totally separate networks, that works too. In that case, you assign the virtual IP to a loopback interface. The server will need IP addresses for each NIC too, so if you have an IP address shortage, that might rule out this solution.

But the short answer is, yes, it’s possible. However, these solutions have enough complexity that they should be designed, implemented, and managed by people who have familiarity with IP failover and routing. There are many more ways to do it wrong than to do it right. ;)

If you want to email me some more details, like expected traffic levels, budget, any hardware you already have and plan to use, whether the is Internet or private, whether you have other equipment on those switches or all this is for one server, server OS, any specific requirements on things like failover time, and so on, I’ll gladly give you a free consultation. If you’re concerned about privacy or anything like that, email me and I’ll provide some references so you can see I’m not just some guy.

what kind of job can I get with just a computer networking diploma?

Posted on August 26th, 2011 by admin in computer networking | 5 Comments »

Does anyone have any knowledge of what kind of job you can get with just a computer networking diploma from Ashworth College online?

Most online college degrees aren’t worth a whole lot – especially if you don’t have any experience to back it up.

Unfortunately they don’t bother telling you that while they are taking your money.

Try checking around temp agencies, and see if you can find something entry-level to bolster your education.

The good thing about the degree is that it can get your foot in the door of some jobs that wouldn’t even consider you otherwise (even if you were actually the best candidate).

(edit: the A+ cert is a good idea – and while it is possible to find a job making 65K right out of the gate, they aren’t exactly easy to find)

Enrolled in CIS Networking, how long into my schooling before I can get a job in computer networking?

Posted on August 21st, 2011 by admin in computer networking | 1 Comment »

I just recently (two days ago) applied to my community college and am enrolled in the Computer Information Systems with the Networking option (as opposed to the computer science option). I chose this after the manager of the IT department where I work (Im in Security here) told me that CIS Networking is "where the money is in this place". Is there any way to get a job in networking or any other type of computer related jobs while I’m still in school?

Most definitely. Help desk teams love to hire students. Also it’s possible your school has student jobs related to your field available. Generally I’d say get your first semester done then you can look for companies in IT hiring for help desk or "cable monkey" positions.

Networking 2 computers without a router?

Posted on August 17th, 2011 by admin in networking computers | 5 Comments »

Hello can any body be kind to give me step by step tutorship on how to network two computers directly with a network cable but without a router. I heard it is possible.
Plz I 4got to add that I am a complete Computer novice and something like( use the cross cable, and give two ip’s in a same class) will make me really confused, that sounds like pro language plz simplified version thank you greatly.

A lot of network cards no longer require cross-over cables as they auto-detect the cables configuration flipping the required lines as needed

How much web developers charge for social networking website?

Posted on August 12th, 2011 by admin in networking | 5 Comments »

I am planning to create social networking website like facebook.
Please any one tell me if I hire freelancers or professional companies, how much do they charge?
Give rough idea for both of them.
Also, If I hire web developers from India or China, how much it will cost me?

From India, if you hire an outsource company, expect to pay $8 to 10 per hour.
If you hire an individual from India, expect to pay $4 to $6 per hour.
Expect it to take twice as long and be half as good. I have no experience with IT from China, but I can tell you that if my experience from India IT is any clue, the people that do web design for outsource companies in India get about $4/hr and if they were in America, they would still only be worth $4/hr. (I warned you)

Expect to pay anyone in the USA $2000+ depending on features. This is a "getting started" price for basic Facebook functionality.
Expect that coming close to what you get from Facebook will take a very long time and probably cost over $6000++ when the details are finished.
You could easily pay over $50,000 depending on who you hire and what the project details are.
