Can you share an internet connection between 2 computers using only 2 wireless networking cards?

Can you share an internet connection between 2 computers using only 2 wireless networking cards? If you plug in a wireless networking card into 2 different computers, if one computer is connected to the internet, would the other computer have access to the internet?

Thanks.

YES!

If you have one computer which has wired access to the Internet you can share this Internet connection to another computer using wireless cards.

Google "ad-hoc wireless". Lots of advice on different sites.

How to setup a network with a network switch?

Posted on January 31st, 2010 by admin in networking switch | 3 Comments »

I have no router, just a network switch. I don’t really need internet access on the client machine.

Anyhow, how do I set it up so both computers can share files and printer access?
Is a crossover cable different from a standard ethernet cable?

I have the printer directly connected to one computer. The computer is connected to the switch, and the switch connects to the other computer.
Thanks!

Do I need to map the drives in order to share files?

Going to a switch, you use regular cables. Most newer switches are intelligent (Auto-midi), and will work with either type of cable, but best to use the right one. Cross over cable is only for a direct computer-computer link .
Then do the sharing wizard, it should enable the rest to work. All machines have to be in the same workgroup – remember that…

need some router/networking wireless adaptor help?

I have a wireless G router, and I was thinking on buying a networking wireless adaptor for my 360 but wasn’t sure on waiting for the 802.11 n one that’s coming out.
I realise the 802.11 n is compatible with g but i was wondering if I bought the new one, would there be any difference in speed or connection,or anything, than if I buy the old one?

It depends on your on router. If your router is g than I don’t think it would make your internet faster if you have a n adapter. Now N routers are suppose to be faster at downloading and uploading than G and I have a N draft which seems to be doing just that, but in order to take advantage of the N router you have to have a N adapter for wireless connectivity.

What are the differences among network hubs, network switches and networ routers?

These 3 devices are all being used for network connection. Though, each one of them have different functions and limitations. Please tell me specifically their differences and functions.

In computers and networking, information passed back and forth over the internet are divided into 7 layers, called the OSI model. The OSI model is important because it a "guide" that all manufacturers have to adhere to, to use TCP/IP (That way you dont have different companies using different standards, some of which dont work with others)
Physical – The actual ethernet cable, phone line, fiber cable
Data – How the 2 devices on either end of the cable talk to make sure what you’re sending is what the other is getting.
Network – This would be your IP address. Kind of like your mailing address. (IP works here)
Transport – In basic terms, handles traffic, sets up connections between computers/servers/etc. (TCP works here)
Session – Handles the communications between programs and applications and TCP/IP.
Presentation – how information is presented to you, Jpgs (pictures) are one example.
Application – The actual application on your system.

Hubs work on layer 1. It’s the physical media that’s important here.
A switch works at layer 2. If you go into a command window and type ipconfig /all You’ll see what’s called a physical address. This is also known as a MAC address, and is what switches use to determine how traffic is to be routed.

Routers work on Layer 3. They are responsible for directing traffic between routers, or routers and switches. Using the same command as above you’ll see your IP Address. The Router uses IP Addresses when communicating.

Even though we may see www.yahoo.com when we type things into our browser, if you type in nslookup www.yahoo.com
You’ll see that there’s actually an IP address assigned to yahoo.

What is the best way to learn computer networking?

Posted on January 31st, 2010 by admin in computer networking | 7 Comments »

I am not at all savvy on computer networking. I only know how to write, log, surf and download etc. but I have near zero knowledge in networking. Is there a soft ware or hardware that will visually show me step by step to to troubleshoot and basically teach me how to maintain my network running? I prefer visual rather than techically phrased, since I am so stupid in technical terminology.
Your advice will be appreciated.

It depends on just how far you are wanting to take it. Are you setting up a network for public use, your private web page, or just a home network. A home network is pretty easy and if you buy a router most will have a tech support number with a real person that will guide you the whole way. As for anything more complicated, either take a class or go to half price books and look through the resources.

Someone using my computer is doing things I don’t want them to do.(Porn, Social networking) I blocked the porn but does any one know how to block the social networking sites?

You have to get a firewall program and block the websites. Try Zone Alarm it is easiest one I can think of to setup.

I made my office network between 5 computers. there is 1 PC has ADSL and other PCs get internet through this computer. Now my problem is, when i get network places–>view workgroup computers i can see only 1 computer. Other computer are invisible on my machine. please give me any help or send me some links to learn more about networking

check the workgroup names of all of ur computers. make it same. check whether file printing and sharing is enabled.
create a folder, share it and give full access to everyone in all the systems. Check again.
