Usually I can connect my laptop to the internet wirelessly, however now when I try to connect my laptop to the internet wirelessly a message pops up that says "This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured. Install wireless networking hardware and verify that the correct drivers are loaded." So my question is how do I go about doing this.

if you see any yellow circles with a ! in it, your hardware is not totally setup..and it won’t work until you find and install the drivers for your system. You would need to go to the manufacturers website to get them.

Also, most laptops with built in wireless have an on/off switch to control the wireless function. Make SURE yours is ON.

I want a home network which I want one computer to actually connect to the router and modem, and another computer upstairs to have wireless internet from the router via PCI wireless networking card (with antenna).

I was thinking Linksys WRT54G. Any better ideas? Also, is it worth paying $10-20 more for the WRT54GL or the WRT54GS or do these routers perform just as well as the standard 54G.

I always recommend the WRT54G. Mine has been flawless.

There are potentially a few available, it all depends on how far you want to go. The basics are as follow. Please note the names may vary from vendor to vendor.

Cut Through – the switch reads the destination address, and immediately starts to forward the frame. Fastest performance, but may lead to the forwarding of invalid packets.

Store and forward – read the whole packet in. Then forward it. Slow, but any errored frames will be dropped rather than forwarded.

Frag-Free – the first 64 bytes are read in, to ensure the packet is not a collision fragment, and then the switch starts to forward. Depending upon viewpoint, this is a good compromise between speed and dropping errored frames, or a msmatch the slows performance, withut guaranteeing prevention of errors if the packet turns out to be incomplete.

No I need a seperate router/gateway? Can I plug my internet carrying ethernet cable from my modem directly into one of the ports on a switch? Is it efficient? Is it possible? Help me out thanks.

No, you will need a router in addition to that, mainly acting as a DHCP server to assign IP addresses.

Your not applying for a sysadmin job. They will not expect you to understand network administration. They want to to understand how to be a user of a network

i tried with folderlock 5.7.5.. but although the files kept in "locker" are locked in that computer, other networking computers can easily open and view the files.. so i m confused… plz help..

This is easy. There’s no need to download extra programs for this — you can simply encrypt the files in question so that only your computer can open them.

I assume you’re running Windows. If this is the case, then go into My Documents or My Computer and find the folder that contains the files in question (it could even be the entire My Documents folder if you wanted).

Right-click the folder you want to "lock" and in the pop-up menu choose Properties. On the "General" tab, near the bottom (next to "read-only" and "hidden" you’ll se a button that says "Advanced" — hit it). Now check the box that says "encrypt contents to secure data." Click OK, then Apply. The files that are encrypted will now appear in green type and can only be opened by your computer unless you "decrypt" them.

Printers and scanners, you can use a network USB device from Walmart, this puts the devices on the network. Then you need a switch , for the network, A router, CAT5 cable, Wireless router, and so on. Questions.
